Michael James Murphy biography and photos
Michael James Murphy (b. 7.31.1951) was born in Portland, Maine, lived in Cape Elizabeth Maine until 1956 and then moved with his parents Stephen Joseph Murphy and Millie Rice Murphy to Stoneham, Massachusetts, His brother Stephen Vincent Murphy was born on March 11, 1958. Millie lost 4 children in between the births of Michael and Stephen. After attending Robin Hood Elementary school, Michael went to Stoneham Middle School, then Stoneham High School. through his junior year. When his family returned to Gleckler Road in Portland, Maine, he attended Deering High School for his senior year. Through out high school he played football and did track, and his senior year took honors courses before attending Hamilton College (1969-1973) in Clinton, New York. He changed his original major of physics to American Studies and continued to play football and throw the shot put, discus and hammer in track.
During his first teaching job (1973-1976) at Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, New York while teaching English to 8th and 9th graders and coaching football and track, he lived first with Fred Axelrod in Manhattan for that first academic year and then with Paul Raso in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn for the next 2 years. His second teaching job (1976-1979) was at Kingswood-Oxford School in West Hartford, Connecticut, where in addition to teaching English and History at the high school level, he coached football, track, and cross country skiing.
He met his wife Cathy Eaton in 1975 at BreadLoaf School of English in Breadloaf, Vermont, an English graduate program they attended from 1975-1980 in 4 years in Vermont and two years at Lincoln College, Oxford University, England. While in England, Cathy and Michael traveled to Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and France. For three years they lived in a log cabin on Lake Garda in Burlington, Connecticut. They moved to Cleland Heights Ohio in the fall of 1979 where Cathy had a job teaching middle school English at the Laurel School in Shaker heights , Ohio.
Their first son, Colin Eaton Murphy, was born on November 26, 1982, and their second son, Devon Eaton Murphy, was born on September 3, 1985.
After moving to Randolph Road in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, from 1979 to 1984 he worked as a realtor at Smythe Cramer before switching careers again and working for A.O. Rule at Environmental Growth Chambers in Chagrin Falls, Ohio in 1985. Cathy and Michael bought a house on 3605 Washington Blvd, Cleveland Heights in 1981. And then a corporate move had Michael contining his career at in Weaverville, North Carolina working for Revco Scientific from 1986 to 1991. The next move for the family was to Michael’s job at the MidAtlantic Laboratory Company in Annapolis, Maryland, A move in 1993 to Bedford NH was due to Michael’s job at the Baker Company of Sanford Maine. Staying in New Hampshire, Michael worked for Labrepco of Horsham PA from 1996 to 2004 . Again staying in New Hampshire , Michael was self-employed selling scientific equipment ( plant growth chambers, freezers, refrigerators, incubators, LN2 freezers, etc) and worked with scientists and medical researchers. In the 1985 to 1991 years he traveled extensively all around the United States to every major medical school doing biomedical research while in his final job he concentrated primarily in Boston and somewhat in New England. Michael retired in March 2016.
The family lived at 105 Kimberly Knoll in Asheville, North Carolina (1986 to 1992), Wintersweet Court, Annapolis, Maryland (1992-1993) and 286 Joppa Hill Road, Bedford New Hampshire starting in 1993. They spent many summers at Conway Lake in Conway, New Hampshire vacationing with the Wally and Daryl Wilson and Al and Teresa Todd and their families. Michael thoroughly enjoyed playing golf initially in North Carolina, then in Massachusetts, and finally in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Particular friends were Chip Dickson, Paul Raso, Chuck Henry, Fred Axelrod, Jackie Donovan, the Bate family, Melanie and David West, Al and Teresa Todd, Liz and Mike Duck, Jeff and Jan Brown, Jon and Cathy Leer, Scott and Robyn Pollock, Bob and Susan Murphy. His golf buddies were Jeff Brown, Michael Piscetola, Dick Montemerlo, and Bill Schnaars.
