Augustus Farlin House (Oct 7 or June 7, 1847-Feb 2 or August 11, 1932)
Augustus Farlin House was born in Cleveland, Ohio, son of Hudson Merwin and Mary (Snyder) House (b. in 1829 in Baden or Bavaria & moved to Boston by 1883), grandson of Joseph, a grocery, (1802) and Anna House (1802), and great-grandson of John Joseph House (Haus) of German origin. By the time Augustus is two, Mary when she is 20 is married to William Zacharias, a cooper) who lives in Woodville, Sandusky, Ohio. Mary and William have three daughters together (Caroline, Mathilda, and Dora). Mary’s parents were Adam (b. 1800) and Margaret Snyder (b. 1808) who also live in Ohio coming around 1835 by 1860. Adam was a farmer. Mary was oldest of 10 children (Mary, Adam, Daniel, Frederick, Jacob, Catherine, Caroline, George, Lucian, and David – all about two years apart.
Augustus went to Woodville Union High School. While he was a student at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, he enlisted in 1863 in the 3d Ohio Volunteer Cavalry for the Civil War. He had two horses shot from under him, but always he loved to ride. One highlight of his military career involved his participation in General William T. Sherman’s 285- mile march to the sea from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia with 60,000 other soldiers. Their mission was to terrify the civilians of George to abandon the Confederate Cause. Although the soldiers did not destroy towns on their path, they stole food and livestock and burns homes of people who resisted. A second highlight of his war years was being a member of the squad that captured Jefferson Davis and his wife near Irwinville, Georgia, on May 10, 1865. The Union soldiers were part of General James H. Wilson’s Calvary.
Augustus married Mary Grace Cleve on August 9 or March 28, 1864 or 1872 in Cuyahoga Country, Ohio. She came from England and had seven siblings, 4 born in England, 1 in Kentucky, and 2 in Ohio. Their parents were James Cleve who was a wagon maker or carpenter later a laborer born in 1822 and Mary Cleve born in 1822. James and Mary had four children: John 1842, Ledorah-1844, Mary 1848, and Matidlda-1849. They immigrated from England around 1850.
Augustus and Mary Grace lost two children and had three surviving children: Lillian House (born 9.1874), August House (b. 2.1880) who died as a youngster, and Pearl Margaret House (12.12.1876 or 1886). They may have lived on 2020 Euclid Avenue and attended the Superior Street Baptist Church. Pearl Margaret Eaton Married Cyrus S. Eaton, and they had seven children before divorcing. Lillian divorced her first husband after having a daughter Isabelle and married Thomas Allen McNamara of Los Angeles
After the war, he studied medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and received his MD in 1867 and began his professional career. From 1878-1879 he pursued post-graduate studies in both Paris and Vienna. He became a professor of surgery in the Cleveland College of Physicians, which later was absorbed by Case Western Reserve University. According to the National Enclopodiea, his lectures were “instructive and interesting.” “He possessed an unusually retentive memory and was by nature sympathetic and kind with a strong fund of humor.”
He was one of the founders of the Lake Shore Banking and Trust Co that was merged into the Cleveland Trust Co. He owned the building at E. 55th and St. Claire where the bank offices originally were. He was a business associate of W. D. B. Alexander and formed the National Screw and Manufacturing Co and the National Co. He often wrote Cyrus Eaton to ask for investing suggestions.
Augustus was a member of the American Mississippi Valley and Ohio State medical associations, the Cleveland Medical Society, the Grand Army of the Republics, and Knights Templars, the Royal Arch Masons and past master of the Cleveland City Loge Free and Accepted Masons. He was eminent commander of the Oriental Commandery, past most excellent high priest of Webb Chapter royal Arch Masons.
The family was wealthy and prominent. Their daughter Pearl Margaret attended a prestigious girl’s school, Hathaway Brown School. He was a member of the Cleveland Public Library Board from 1888-1894.
Augustus published a series of articles in the Cleveland Medical Journal.” He wrote about how surgery related to Tuberculosis, Lymph notes in Children, cure for umbilical and ventral hernias in adults, malignant tumors in the kidneys, tumor in Female Mammary Gland, thyroids, and gallstones. According to the 1910 Ohio Census, Mary Snyder was 80, head of household, and living alone. This is Mary Cleve’s mother.
On June 20, 1911, married his nurse, Helen Wolpert (b. 1879; from Grand Ledge, Michigan) in Essex, Windsor, Ontario after Augustus had retired and divorced Mary Cleve. Her parents are Caleb Wollpert and Azubah Burgess, both born in Germany. She was 32 and he was 53They moved to Los Angeles and had a summer home in Northfield, Ohio.
His grandchildren at Acadia Farms have wonderful memories of his spending time with them and taking them in a pony-drawn cart for ice cream. His daughter, Margaret often visited him, and his son-in-law was very fond of hin.
On January 30, 1932, Cyrus wrote his father-in-law at 1732 Courtney Avenue in Los Angeles, CA, so we might assume he owned a house or rented a house there. The letter expressed his gladness that Augustus was feeling better and looking forward to seeing him in the summer. Note, in 2016 the house still exists, and Farley Tobin was able to find it.
Sadly, Augustus died in Los Angeles, California, on February 2, 1932, probably before he received the letter. Funeral services were held in the Eaton home on 8917 Euclid Avenue. He is buried at the Lake View Cemetery.
